                                                   Abstract

Man is a social animal, living in society it does not happen that he can live without being influenced by social rules, so Indian society and especially rural society is mainly caste based society. Here the main basis of social stratification is the caste system. At present we have innumerable castes and sub-castes in the country. Each caste has its own characteristics. In fact, the caste system is only a product and a unique institution of Indian society. Today our society is divided into about three thousand castes and sub-castes and this practice has not limited to Hindus only but has also penetrated to some extent even among Muslims and Christians. The history of the caste system goes back thousands of years. In fact, in Indian society, many tasks have been accomplished by the caste system and are being done even today. Despite many defects, today the importance of caste system has been playing a special role in rural and urban Indian social system since ancient times. The most important function of the caste system in our social life is to determine the social status of individuals. Changes have been taking place in the caste system from time to time. Initially only the Varna system existed in the society. As a result of the development of Jainism and Buddhism, the position of Brahmins declined. Even in the caste system, the position of Shudras was very low and pathetic. In the 19th century, social reformers made efforts to end the caste system through social movements and passed many such acts in which the nature of the caste system was relaxed.
