A new chapter in the development of foreign trade began during
the reign of the Kushanas. India emerged as a major center of trade in the
countries of the East and the West. New trade routes were discovered
during the time of Kushanas. With the development of trading centers and
ports, it became easier for traders to move goods from one place to
another. Many prosperous ports were developed on the coast of India, in
which 'Mujrim' was a major port situated on the banks of Malwar. There
was a settlement of Roman merchants. Apart from this Madura,
Bhrigukachha, Sopara, Bhrigukachha, Puhar, Kaliana, Kaveri Pattanam,
Poduke Sopatma and Tamralipti were the other major ports. Indian
merchants used Arabian Sea, Hindu Sea, Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Bay of
Bengal for international trade. India's foreign trade was also done from
the countries of the southeast, Verma, Sumatra, Malaya, Java.
For this Indian merchants used three sea routes. The first
Tamralipti from where the Malaya peninsula via the Andaman Islands, the
second route crossed the Bay of Bengal from the ports like Dantapur in
Kalinga and Kaveripatnam in Andhra, the third route went from Lanka
(Sinhala Island) to Malaya.
